Cutting energy use at Connecticut’s largest mall

October 31, 2017

An energy-saving refit will shave an estimated $200,000 off annual electricity bills at Connecticut Post Mall, Connecticut’s largest mall. Co-owners USAA Real Estate Co. and Centennial Real Estate Co. worked with utility provider The United Illuminating Co. to identify key areas for conserving energy at the 1.3 million-square-foot mall, in Milford, Conn.

Nearly 1,000 interior light fixtures and almost 400 exterior ones were replaced with LED lighting. Upgrades were made to the mall’s heating, ventilation and cooling systems, and the building management system was updated to allow for control of the lighting and HVAC by computer or handheld device.

United Illuminating says the $776,707 worth of improvements will pay for themselves in three years.

Connecticut Post opened in 1960 and has since been expanded. Today the mall has five anchor stores and roughly 130 regular stores, plus a 14-screen movie theater and an IMAX facility on the third level.

“There are many reasons why this energy-efficiency upgrade was important to us,” said Bill DiSiero, facility manager at Centennial Real Estate. “We continue to improve the center with the latest technology to enhance the shopping experience and create better comfort and security for customers. Improved temperature control and optimal lighting creates a better environment for personnel and [for] increasing productivity. The new lighting also provides increased security for employees who work early hours and late at night.”
