What’s driving the click-and-collect movement?

November 1, 2018

According to a recent Colliers International report, consumers are embracing their 24-7 shopping superpower as it gets increasingly speedier and more convenient. Click-and-collect is another way for retailers to serve shoppers seeking to receive their purchases immediately.

This growing market has retailers eagerly adopting the ways all of it is done. Think of Walmart’s new TV ads and the drive-through pickup model for purchases made online. Landlords must take hold of these changes as the retail experience continues to evolve, says the Colliers quarterly report, titled What’s Driving the Click-and-Collect Movement?

Top five reasons for using click-and-collect

The popularity of click-and-collect will continue blending the in-store and digital experiences. Digital assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Home Pod and Google Home have become go-to technology for grocery and household purchases.

Spending dynamics of click-and-collect shoppers in-store

Nearly 60 percent of consumers who order online for store pickup go on to spend in-store as well once they are there. This spurred some $1.14 billion in physical retail spending last year.

“While the average additional amount spent by click-and-collect shoppers doesn’t compare to a typical in-store-only spend, we anticipate this blended shopping experience to continue to grow and drive in-store sales with the click-and-collect movement,” said Anjee Solanki, Colliers' national retail services director.

It is safe to assume that the retail revolution is under way, observers say. Fueled by innovation and by inspiration from some unlikely places, retail brands are stepping up to capture consumer attention every which way. Given all this activity, sources say it is reasonable to wonder whether a significant increase in retail spend is occurring across certain categories, based on the new ease of ordering, and whether retailers are adapting to the demand.

One thing is clear: Immediate gratification is here to stay.
