Tech startup aims to play pop-up retail matchmaker

June 8, 2018

Houston-based tech startup PopUp Shops presented plans to go nationwide at RECon last month.

The firm has been helping Houston retailers connect with landlords to find temporary store space for the past year, including companies whose stores were damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

"The retail landscape is dramatically changing, and pop-up shops are an answer to help brands and spaces reinvent themselves," said Barry Goldware, a company co-founder, speaking to the Houston Chronicle. "Shorter leases are becoming the norm."

The PopUp Shops website pairs landlords and tenants based on their mutual needs and then enables them to negotiate lease terms through a messaging platform. The company has worked with such retailers as Twisted Arrow Goods and Bernie's Burger Bus, and with GGP, NewQuest Properties, Simon, Weingarten Realty and other real estate firms.

These links provide more information about pop-up shops and the startup firms capitalizing from this growing retail sector.
