NHL Seattle, which is close to obtaining an NHL franchise for the city, will locate the team's corporate headquarters and training center at Simon's planned Northgate mixed-use development.
Simon is converting the former Northgate Mall into a mixed-use district. The project will benefit from the establishment of a highly anticipated light-rail station in 2021. Besides developing about 500,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, Simon has plans for roughly 800,000 square feet of class-A office space and as many as 1,200 residential units and hospitality tenants on the site.
NHL Seattle says it is committed to building the most environmentally sustainable practice facility in the NHL, using structural wood products indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. Moreover, the planned practice-training center, to be built at the very center of the property, will comprise three NHL-size ice sheets: one specifically for NHL Seattle team practice and use, and the others for various community and team uses.
"We are thrilled to collaborate with NHL Seattle and [to] make their training center and corporate headquarters a key piece of Northgate's transformation from a traditional regional shopping mall into a world-class, transit-oriented, mixed-use center," said Michael E. McCarty, COO of Simon Malls. "The transformation of Northgate is a prime example of our ability to create compelling ways for consumers to live, work, play, stay, shop — and now skate — at their favorite Simon destination."
