Simon breaks ground on Phipps Plaza expansion

October 19, 2018

Simon has broken ground on the redevelopment of Phipps Plaza, which continues the luxury Atlanta mall's transformation into a mixed-use center.

Plans call for a 90,000-square-foot Life Time Fitness and a Nobu-branded hotel and restaurant, and a 13-story office building and adjacent courtyard surrounded by restaurants will also be part of the mix. The Beck Group has been chosen to design and build the project, which is to open in phases, starting in early 2021.

"Phipps Plaza has long been a luxury icon in the Southeast, and this expansion will further elevate its exceptional position by creating a reimagined destination to live, work, shop and dine, unlike any other in the region," said Simon Chairman and CEO David E. Simon.

The 90,000-square-foot Life Time Fitness center will help expand Phipps Plaza's leisure offerings dramatically

The three-level Life Time center will offer a spa; a rooftop pool, beach club and bistro; a children's activities center; and yoga and cycle classes.

The Nobu restaurant will operate in a 10,000-square-foot space at the 150-room Nobu Hotel, which is to have a rooftop pool, a spa and a corporate conference space of its own. Nobu Hotels is a venture whose co-founders are chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and film producer Meir Teper.

The Nobu restaurant in Atlanta will be attached to the hotel

"We are very proud to be partnering with Simon as they continue to elevate Phipps Plaza from a renowned luxury center to an unparalleled, globally recognized, mixed-use destination which still offers brands that simply can't be found elsewhere in Atlanta," said Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hotels. "We believe our Nobu hotel and restaurant at Phipps will be a great addition to the new Phipps Plaza and make it even more popular."

A courtyard surrounded by restaurants will be easily accessible to office workers

The ongoing transformation of Phipps Plaza over recent years has seen the addition of restaurants, residences and a hotel. The AC Hotel by Atlanta Buckhead at Phipps Plaza offers nearly 200 guest rooms and suites, and the Domain at Phipps Plaza residential complex comprises about 300 urban-style luxury residences.
