Grand Prairie opens
Merchants in Paragon Outlet Partners’ fully-leased, $100 million outlet center in Texas, anchored by Bloomingdale’s The Outlet Store and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, hardly had time to catch their breath during the four-day opening.

2012 Outlet Retail Chain Awards
The 2012 ORCAs, presented during the VRN outlet convention in Secaucus, Sept. 10-11, drew the largest audience since their inception. The “Best” chains this year included Coach Factory Store (visual merchandising), Levi’s Outlet (value equation), Michael Kors (customer service), New York & Company (new outlet chain), Tommy Hilfiger (marketing program) and Under Armour (overall excellence).

2012 Hall of Fame
Five years ago the industry trade group Developers of Outlet Centers & Retailers created the Outlet Hall of Fame to honor the executives who have played - and in some cases still play - an important role in the industry’s success. This year’s class of inductees includes four industry pioneers: Steve Craig, Betty Ende, Brad Evans and Elise Jaffe.

A visit to Long Island

Vanderbilt Equities Corp., which opened Manchester Designer Outlets in 1985, is planning an expansion of the 27-year-old Vermont center; Simon Property Group and Taubman Centers are at it again in St. Louis - this time Taubman has rolled back its opening date to beat Simon’s; Poag Lifestyle Centers and the Simkin Group submitted plans to develop the Outlet Shops of the Mid-South in the Memphis suburb of Southhaven, Miss. Construction has begun on the $100 million, 146,000-sf expansion of Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon, Calif.
