Walmart to double number of EV charging stations at stores

April 20, 2018

Walmart is making a bet on the future of electric vehicles.

The retailer will work with Volkswagen subsidiary Electrify America to roll out electric-vehicle chargers at 100 locations across 34 states by the summer of 2019, effectively doubling the current number of such chargers at Walmart stores.

Though the vast majority of Walmart shoppers do not own an electric vehicle, this new charging infrastructure is designed to last at least 10 years. Walmart already works with a variety of vendors for its existing stations, among them ChargePoint, EVGo and Tesla.

Mark Vanderhelm, Walmart's vice president of energy, told GreenBiz that boosting the number of these chargers is a way to deliver a better customer experience. "There’s a transition [to electrification] happening, and this is our opportunity to participate in that transition."
