ICSC members will assemble in Washington, DC on June 17-19 for the 31st annual Strategic Leadership Summit, ICSC’s premier federal advocacy event.
“There are multiple bills before Congress that could dramatically impact our members, including tax issues such as carried interest and correcting the mistakes that lengthened the depreciation period for retail improvements, and infrastructure investment,” Betsy Laird, senior vice president for Global Public Policy, said. “It is more important than ever for us to continue to engage with Congressional offices on issues impacting our industry.”
The event is open to all ICSC members, even those with no previous experience lobbying on ICSC issues.
“We have briefing sessions to ensure attendees feel completely comfortable talking with their elected officials and we try to pair new attendees with SLS ‘veterans’ whenever possible,” Laird said. “Walking the halls of Congress and talking to legislators is an incredibly empowering experience and one that absolutely influences the outcomes of legislation.”
ICSC members are uniquely able share real world examples of how legislation impacts the industry.
“There’s a lot of noise about the state of retail. When you attend SLS, ICSC helps to filter that noise, and focus on the issues that will have a meaningful impact on the continued success of our industry,” ICSC Florida Government Relations Chair David Walthall (vice president of Kimley-Horn) said. “SLS attendees are armed with this information and are able to connect with our Members of Congress to blend the data with real, memorable stories that resonate.”
ICSC PAC Chair Marty Mayer (president and CEO of Stirling Properties) said the meeting also provides a unique opportunity to meet with an impressive cross section of ICSC members from around the country in a small group setting.
“SLS is an excellent opportunity to not only network with industry leaders but also to help influence policy issues so critical to our industry,” Mayer said.
This year’s event will feature a baseball game between the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies, briefings on key legislation and insights from members of Congress with experience in retail real estate.
The hotel deadline for the event is May 31.
