Malls across the U.S. are playing host to what is arguably their most creative tenant yet: Vincent van Gogh.
The Van Gogh Museum Pop-Up Tour opened at King of Prussia (Pa.) mall on Aug. 17. The tour will visit six other prominent U.S. malls between now and the end of next year. But this exhibition, organized by the Amsterdam Museum, will feature no original masterpieces.
Proceeds from the tour will go to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
“Most of the masterpieces are so delicate that moving them around is hazardous,” notes a website promoting the exhibition. And then, of course, given that each of Van Gogh’s works is worth many millions of dollars, there is also the question of security. But museum experts have gone to great lengths to faithfully reproduce the paintings using Fujifilm laser technology.
“These so-called 'Van Gogh Museum Editions' are premium-quality, three-dimensional replicas of Van Gogh's masterpieces,” explains the website. “The Museum Editions pay exclusive tribute to Van Gogh's artistic genius and original, unique approach to art.”
“Not everyone is able to visit the museum in Amsterdam. With the Van Gogh Museum Editions Pop-Up Tour, the Van Gogh Museum is exploring new ways and techniques to share Vincent's work with people from all over the world”
Among the paintings are Almond Blossoms, The Bedroom at Arles, The Harvest and Sunflowers.
The tour will stop at the Mall at Short Hills (New Jersey, Dec. 1, 2018–Jan. 31, 2019); The Galleria (Houston, February–March); Copley Place (Boston, March–April); Westfarms (Farmington, Conn., May–June); Cherry Creek (Denver, August–September); and Beverly Center (Los Angeles, October–November).
Admission will be $5 for adults, with children up to age 10 admitted free.
“Not everyone is able to visit the museum in Amsterdam,” notes the museum’s announcement. “With the Van Gogh Museum Editions Pop-Up Tour, the Van Gogh Museum is exploring new ways and techniques to share Vincent's work with people from all over the world.”
