Holiday hiring is in full swing as retailers scramble to fill some 757,000 job openings across the U.S., about 100,000 more than a year ago.
Retail chains are offering higher wages, paid time off and profit-sharing in an effort to draw part-time staff, reports The Wall Street Journal. From March through June, the number of job openings exceeded the number of hires for the first time in 10 years, the newspaper said, citing the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Kohl's and J.C.Penney began hiring holiday workers in June
J.C.Penney and Kohl’s began hiring holiday workers in June, about three months earlier than is customary. Target says it intends to hire about 120,000 workers, 20 percent more than last year, and this week the company bumped up its hourly pay rate by $1, to $12. Walmart and CVS have both raised their workers’ pay recently as well.
Delivery companies are scrambling for workers. UPS is seeking roughly 100,000 full-time and part-time people for the holidays — 5,000 more than the company was seeking at this same time last year. And FedEx is looking to hire about 55,000 workers.
