An increasingly interconnected world is seeing a trend of remote workers with choices of where to work for the day, which creates a valuable opportunity for developers to attract co-working companies to retail centers, according to Colliers International.

The popularity of urban centers and malls is partly a function of their ability to deliver on what people want from flexible working space.
Nearly 90 percent of the respondents to a Global Data consumer panel of 2,000 participants said they view safety and security as the highest value in any co-working location.
Good transport links were the top concern of nearly 85 percent of the respondents, and following next were proximity to dining options (71.7 percent of those responding) and plentiful parking space (70.3 percent). Having shops nearby was comparatively less important, but still came in for respectable mention by well over half the respondents (62.3 percent).
Co-working spaces have potential to help malls drive foot traffic to shops and restaurants and to boost spending. About two-thirds of respondents said a co-working space located in a mall would encourage them to visit shops more often; for restaurants, the respondent number was 73 percent.
