U.S. retail sales (minus sales of cars and gas) rose by a healthy 5.1 percent last month compared with a year ago, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Health and beauty products were particularly strong, up by 6.7 percent — a significant improvement, given that in June of last year this category was up by only 0.8 percent over June 2016.
Americans were doing a lot of dining out last month too, it seems, because restaurants and bars saw an 8 percent increase in business, the report shows.
Other categories that did well were building-supply stores (up by 6.2 percent), furniture (up by 4.8 percent) and apparel (4 percent growth).
“It was another strong month for our industry. And landlords also will welcome those restaurant and bar sales, given that more and more eating establishments are locating in shopping centers”
“It was another strong month for our industry,” said Jean Lambert, ICSC's vice president of research. “And landlords also will welcome those restaurant and bar sales, given that more and more eating establishments are locating in shopping centers.”
Electronics store sales increased by 2.1 percent, while general-merchandise sales — covering all multimerchandise category retailers, such as department stores, discounters, dollar stores and membership warehouse clubs — saw sales rise by 2.3 percent over June of last year.
Sales in the category for sporting goods, hobby merchandise, books and music were off by 4.7 percent.
