LONDON (3 September 2018): The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) today announced the hiring of Joost Koomen as Head of European Public Affairs of ICSC Europe. In this role, Koomen will advocate for ICSC’s legislative and regulatory agenda in Europe, and he will engage with ICSC’s membership on European public policy of interest to the retail property industry. He will also head the ICSC Europe Brussels office. He starts on Monday, 3 September 2018.
Koomen joins ICSC from FTI Consulting, where he was senior director of strategic communications, advising corporate, government, trade association and NGO clients on a broad range of issues including financial services, trade policy and Brexit. At FTI, Koomen also established legislative and regulatory advocacy strategies for clients in various sectors including renewable energy. Prior, Koomen was a director for public affairs for three years and an associate at law firm Van Bael & Bellis for five years. Having completed an internship at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, he started his career in Brussels at the Legal Service of the European Commission and continued as an assistant to Andrew Duff MEP in the European Parliament.
“We are thrilled to welcome Joost to ICSC as a strategic partner to achieve our policy goals in our Europe division,” said Bill Kistler, executive vice president and managing director of ICSC EMEA. “Joost’s background perfectly positions him to serve ICSC’s members and represent the association as we navigate the industry’s continued evolution.”
Koomen holds an LLM in EU law from Maastricht University (NL), an MA in European Politics from Sciences Po Paris (FR) as well as a Masters in Belgian law from the Free University Brussels (BE). He was a member of the Brussels Bar from 2008 to 2013. In addition to teaching MBA program workshops, he has appeared in various national and international publications, sharing insight on industry and policy topics.
