ICSC Announces Valerie Richardson as 2018-2019 Chairman

May 22, 2018

NEW YORK (May 22, 2018) – ICSC announced at RECon that the Board of Trustees has elected Valerie Richardson, CRX, CLS, the organization’s chairman for the 2018–2019 term. As ICSC’s 59th chairman, she succeeds Kenneth F. Bernstein. She is the fifth woman to serve as chairman. The trustees also named Daniel B. Hurwitz, founder and CEO of Raider Hill Advisors, vice chairman.

Richardson is the organization's first chairman ever to come to the post from an active retail company. As vice president of real estate for the Coppell, Texas–based Container Store, Richardson is responsible for site evaluation and lease negotiation, and for coordinating store design and construction of the company's nationwide store expansion program.

“The value and service ICSC delivers to its retailer members is the reason I have been involved with the organization for 35 years,” said Richardson. “I look forward to working with ICSC leadership to bring all of what ICSC has to offer to my peers, as well as [to] those just now entering this dynamic industry. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as chairman of ICSC at such an innovative and transformative time in retail and retail real estate.”

Before joining Container Store, in the fall of 2000, Richardson was senior vice president of real estate and development at Ann Taylor, Inc., where she administered the store expansion strategy of both Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft. Before that, she was vice president of real estate and development for the superstore division of Barnes & Noble. Richardson began her real estate career at Dallas-based development firm Trammell Crow Co. She became an ICSC trustee in 2004.

“We welcome Valerie as ICSC chairman,” said ICSC President and CEO Tom McGee. “Valerie’s expertise in leading multiple retailers through successful expansions and transitions will be a valuable asset for ICSC. Additionally, the perspective she brings from the retail side of the business will be crucial as we continue to elevate our programs and services to meet the needs of our retail members.”

Vice Chairman Hurwitz provides strategic, executive and operational oversight for the portfolio companies owned by Raider Hill Advisors' clients, as well as acquisition and retail advisory services. Hurwitz has held a variety of positions in the retail and real estate sectors, dating back to 1986. Most recently, he was CEO of DDR Corp. He serves as lead director on the GGP board, and he is also a member of the boards of Brixmor Property Group and Diamonds Direct, as well as being an adviser to the boards of Edens and of ShopCore.
