Canadian bookstore chain Indigo opened its first U.S. store, at Taubman’s Mall at Short Hills (N.J.).
Design firm Burdifilek created the 30,000-square-foot flagship, which introduces the Indigo brand to U.S. consumers and features the company’s signature mix of books, decor, gifts and other items. “Indigo has been on an incredible journey over the past few years,” said Diego Burdi, a co-founder and creative director of Burdifilek, in a press release. “The new concept store at Short Hills is the culmination of a creative and considered design process, one that fully captures and realizes the notion of a cultural department store for book lovers.”
The store features an open floor plan that is divided into zones, each with its own focal point and aesthetic “sensibility.” These zones serve to elevate the store experience, creating unconventional configurations in which books are freely interwoven with gifts, toys and other curated merchandise. This spatial planning and programming is intended to help reshape the way customers explore, creating an enriched environment that brings Indigo’s vision and mission to life, Burdi says.
In Canada, Indigo operates five superstores under the Chapters and Indigo banners, plus 120 small-format stores under the Coles, Indigospirit and Book Company banners.
