ICSC: International Council of Shopping Centers

Emerging Professionals

You’ve landed your first job and looking to increase your presence in the industry - ICSC is here to help, and here’s how:

ICSC’s Next Gen program was developed with industry newcomers in mind. With local programs in about 75 U.S. cities, plus cities in Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia, Next Gen meetings offer a unique opportunity to mingle with peers, while learning from industry pros. Next Gen gatherings combine an educational presentation with plenty of time for socializing and networking. Covering a wide-range of issues, Next Gen meetings are arranged to fit the busy schedules of young professionals. In addition to the many local programs in your area, each year Next Gen hosts a National Conference to bring together the nation’s most promising industry leaders.

ICSC has also established programs and events that allow you to meet colleagues with whom you share a special professional affinity. If you are a woman in the industry, a lawyer, retailer, or social media & marketing expert, for instance, ICSC has created “Special Interest” Groups, with events at larger ICSC conferences that will facilitate your learning from professionals in your chosen field.

Volunteer Experience

The Next Gen program, like all of ICSC’s meetings, are developed, organized, and carried out by scores of volunteers. This initiative offers an excellent opportunity to jump into the volunteer ranks of ICSC, further building your network and programming experience, as you advance your career. For additional details about Next Gen and volunteer activities, contact Laura Chesney lchesney@icsc.org or 646-728-3629.

Diversity & Inclusion Opportunities

ICSC has been a leader in helping our industry look like the consumers we serve. Project REAP, retail real estate’s premier diversity recruitment tool, is now operating classes in major markets, including New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, and Los Angeles. Through a competitive application process, working professionals are selected for a 10-week educational and leadership training program, with instruction and mentoring from a cadre of top-flight industry professionals. Upon graduation, candidates are eligible to interview for positions with sponsoring companies including McDonalds, Walmart, Simon, CBRE, JLL, Macerich, Sperry Van Ness, Forest City, and Starbucks. For additional details about Project REAP, contact Program Manager Osayamen Asemota-Bartholomew, obartholomew@projectreap.org or 646-728-3496.

Continuing Education

Getting a leg up on the competition requires ongoing learning and the continual commitment to sharpening skills. ICSC offers programs, worldwide, to deepen your understanding in your area of expertise, as well as classes to learn fundamentals in other areas of the industry. Whether you select e-distance learning programs or the residential classes of the John T. Riordan School and the University of Shopping Centers (now available on the campuses of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California, as well as locations worldwide), ICSC prepares intellectually engaging, but practically-oriented, curriculum. The instruction prepares students to sit for the professional designation exams, described below. For questions about Continuing Education Programs, contact Michelle Anderson, Education Coordinator, manderson@icsc.org or 646-728-3822.

Professional Certification

ICSC developed the professional certification nearly 50 years ago to offer special recognition to those demonstrating the highest competence in the industry. Currently five unique designations allow you to distinguish yourself from your peers: CRX (Executive Leadership); CSM (Management); CMD (Marketing); CLS (Leasing); CDP (Development). Certification designees are able to capitalize on a global network of talent, achieving the highest level of professional standards, and learning best practices in the field. There is no greater investment in your future, from an educational and networking standpoint, than preparing for and completing a professional certification. For questions about the Certification Programs, contact Margarita Almonte-Murphy, Certification Manager, mamurphy@icsc.org or 646-728-3694.

Professional Development Scholarships & Awards

ICSC Foundation supports more than 20 scholarships that cover the costs of attending on the John T. Riordan Professional Development schools worldwide. In addition, the awards include travel expenses to the industry’s flagship industry gathering, RECon. The educational and networking combination of these experiences offers a unique opportunity for professional exposure and career advancement. For questions about ICSC Foundation Scholarships, contact Foundation Manager Bethany Vensel, bvensel@icsc.org or 646-728-3628.
