One-stock shopping
Now you can check your stocks and then go shopping all on one Website, thanks to brokerage house Merrill Lynch’s new online store, shopmerrill.com. About a year ago, the company started linking to retailers’ sites, but just moved into high gear this fall. The site acts as a portal, allowing consumers access to 450 online retailers, and 8 million items, according to Merrill Lynch. The site links consumers to sites from companies such as Barnes&Noble.com, ESPN, eToys, PetQuarters.com and BabyCenter.

Buy.com in public offering
Online retailer Buy.com has filed plans to raise $150 million in an initial public stock offering. The Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based firm is considered the fourth-largest Internet retailer by revenue and the largest one still privately held. The company pioneered the strategy of making money by selling ads on its site, and sells products at or below cost on the Website.

HomeGrocer.com gets funding
Internet grocery company HomeGrocer.com, Kirkland, Wash., netted $100 million in venture funding, with the latest round of capital from previous investors including venture capitalists Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Barksdale Group and Amazon.com. HomeGrocer.com operates in three West Coast markets: in Seattle; Portland, Ore.; and Orange County, Calif. Customers can order 13,000 brand items, including meats, seafood and produce.
