‘Opening’ season for malls

Arbor Place’s debut brought regional mall retailing to Atlanta’s western suburbs.

October was the month for mall openings, as four super-regional centers made their debuts. CBL & Associates Properties’ 1.2 million-square foot Arbor Place in Douglasville, Ga., opened Oct. 13, bringing regional mall retail to the western suburbs of Atlanta. Dillard’s, Parisian and Sears are anchors.

KA Architects served as the design architects for both Arbor Place and The Landing at Arbor Place, the 163,000-square-foot associated center developed next to the mall.

The two shopping centers in Douglasville bring to 11 the number of shopping centers developed, owned and managed in Georgia by CBL & Associates Properties.

The ribbon cutting for Jersey Gardens, Glimcher Realty Trust’s 1.3 million-square-foot value megamall in Elizabeth, N.J., was held Oct. 21.

The center, designed by David Rockwell of The Rockwell Group, sports a 50-foot garden wall and a series of large arbors throughout the mall. Anchors include Neiman Marcus Last Call, Marshall’s, and Bed Bath & Beyond, with a Loews 22-screen cinema opening in the spring.

Elizabeth, N.J., welcomed Jersey Gardens Oct. 21.

Forest City Enterprises’ Promenade in Temecula (Calif.) debuted Oct. 27. The center’s 800,000 square feet includes anchors JC Penney and Sears.

The last of the openings was Katy Mills, which made its debut outside Houston on Oct. 28 (see story, page 20).
