Mixed-use project to rise at Brooklyn printing plant

The former New York Daily News printing plant in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y., will be turned into a $25 million retail, entertainment and residential complex.

The 290,000-square-foot industrial property, at 700 Pacific Street (near Dean street), is across the street from the Atlantic Avenue Long Island Railroad Terminal and the Atlantic Center Mall. The planned seven-story development will house 50,000 square feet of ground floor retail, a 12-screen multiplex movie theater on the second and third floors, and 88 condominium apartments.

The Palladium Co. bringing Columbus Centre to New York

The Palladium Co., New York City, is working on more than $3.1 billion worth of entertainment-enhanced retail developments throughout the United States, including Columbus Centre, a 2.7 million-square-foot hotel, retail, office and residential complex to be built at the site of the Coliseum in New York City.

Construction is set to begin in 2000. Highlighted by a six-story galleria, Columbus Centre will serve as headquarters for Time Warner and will have 685,000 square feet of specialty retail and destination restaurants, 325 luxury condominiums, a five-star hotel and a 12,000-seat concert hall. The project will have 98,000 square feet dedicated to parking.

Maryland's Centre at Hagerstown set to open in spring 2000

The Centre at Hagerstown is expected to open in spring 2000 with more than 700,000 square feet of retail and restaurants spread out over 67 acres. Stores will include a Wal-Mart Super Center, The Home Depot, Marshalls, Circuit City, Borders Books & Music, PetsMart, Pier 1 and OfficeMax. The mall, being developed by Cleveland-based Developers Diversified Realty (DDR) and Petrie Dierman Kughn of McLean, Va., will be located at the northwest intersection of Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 40. Parking will be available for 3,124 cars.

Initial phase of Trammell Crow's First Colony Center under way

The first phase is under way for First Colony Center, a 500,000-square-foot retail power center in St. Mary's County, Md. The project is part of a 228-acre planned development to include more than 400 residential units and 435,000 square feet of office and research and development space. Set to open in spring 2000, the center will be located at the intersection of state Routes 4 and 235. Developer for the project is Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co.

Carl M. Freeman Cos. helping seniors while Safeway is closed

Developer Carl M. Freeman Cos., Potomac, Md., is going the extra mile to make sure senior citizens are taken care of while a neighborhood Safeway supermarket is closed in Rockville, Md.

Seniors who live across the street from Rock Creek Village Shopping Center are being driven to the next closest store to do their shopping as part of an arrangement worked out between the developer and the Bauer Park Apartments, where the seniors live. The developer, which is remodeling the shopping center in which the Safeway is located, chartered a bus to ferry seniors back and forth until the $7.5 million renovation is complete in May 2000. The makeover will include a new community courtyard, landscaping, roofs and facade.

Springfield, Va.'s Loisdale Center anchored by Bed Bath & Beyond

The Loisdale Center in Springfield, Va., as of press time, was set to open last month with anchors Bed Bath & Beyond, Circuit City, Barnes & Noble, and DSW Warehouse. The project, a joint venture between Continental Real Estate Companies of Columbus, Ohio, and Trout, Segall & Doyle Development Co. of Baltimore, will be located on Loisdale Road between I-95 and the Franconia-Springfield Parkway. The 10-acre Loisdale Center is expected to draw traffic from nearby Springfield Mall and the 267,000 vehicles that travel I-95 daily.
