The Body Shop opens first outlet

The Body Shop opened its first outlet store in late March, at the BAA McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, York, England. Called The Body Shop Depot, the store offers surplus stock and out-of-season lines at 50% off retail prices.

"The strength of outlet retailing across the U.K. has impressed us -- we have been reviewing the concept for some time and are attracted by the additional exposure it can offer," said David Ambramson, retail development manager, The Body Shop, London.

The outlet stores have a different design from the chain's full-price stores, utilizing recycled enamel baths and butler sinks as display units and reconditioned factory items -- including green factory lights, wooden pallets and containers from The Body Shop's warehouse -- to create what it calls an "eco-industrial look."

"The new look and name is an exciting new departure from current shop formats, and has been developed specifically to appeal to the designer outlet customer," Abramson added.

"It is an excellent new and much-sought-after brand for us," said J.W. Kaempfer, CEO of BAA McArthur Glen, London. "The Body Shop unit extends our offering of toiletries and adds to the impressive list of fashion, accessories and homeware tenants we have at York."
