CBL building community center in North Carolina

MORGANTON, N.C. -- Construction has begun on Fiddler's Run, a 162,876-square-foot community center scheduled to open in March of 1999.

CBL & Associates Properties Inc., Chattanooga, Tenn., is developing the center, which is 93% leased. JC Penney and Goody's Family Clothing are signed on as anchor tenants. The first phase will include one other anchor and 30,000 square feet of small shop space. Plans call for a second phase that would accommodate an additional anchor of up to 60,000 square feet.

Donahue Schriber, Howard Hughes Corp. in venture

LAS VEGAS -- Donahue Schriber, Newport Beach, Calif., and The Howard Hughes Corp., a division of the Rouse Co., Columbia, Md., plan a 60-acre retail project at the northeast corner of Charleston Blvd. and the proposed Western Beltway in the master-planned community of Summerlin.

Donahue Schriber is scheduled to begin construction at the site in late 1999 or early 2000, with an opening date in late 2000 or early 2001. Summerlin is part of the real estate holdings of the late Howard R. Hughes Jr., which are being developed by The Howard Hughes Corp.

Also in Nevada, Donahue Schriber will begin construction of the 110,000-square-foot Albertson's-anchored El Dorado Center in North Las Vegas. The project is expected to open in spring of 1999.

Elsewhere, Donahue Schriber's 560,000-square-foot Natomas Marketplace in Sacramento, Calif., is slated to open this fall. A 16-screen Regal Cinema, Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, PetsMart and Staples are among the tenants in the center. Raley's Marketplace, a 100,000-square-foot center in Fairfield, Calif., anchored by Raley's Food and Drug, also is scheduled for a fall opening.

In Hemet, Calif., an 80,000-square-foot Sears, Roebuck and Co. will join Donahue Schriber's Hemet Valley Mall this fall.

Glimcher Group, PREIT plan power center

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Glimcher Group Inc., Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, Philadelphia, have announced a joint venture to build Paxton Towne Centre, a 600,000-square-foot power center on U.S. Rte. 22, just east of the Colonial Park Mall. Construction could begin this year.

Bloomingdale's to anchor San Francisco project

SAN FRANCISCO -- A partnership between the City and County of San Francisco, Federated Department Stores Inc., Cincinnati, and Forest City Enterprises Inc., Cleveland, has announced an agreement to bring Bloomingdale's to a new retail center as part of a development at the Emporium Building on Market Street.

The five-story, 327,000-square-foot Bloomingdale's will be the second-largest in the United States, after the chain's Lexington Ave. flagship in New York. The store is expected to open in 2001.

Approximately 700,000 square feet will be leased to other retailers by Forest City. Development is expected to cost $300 million, and construction could begin in mid-1999.

Entertainment center in West Palm breaks ground

WEST PALM BEACH, Calif. -- New York-based The Palladium Co. L.P. is expected to break ground this month for the 600,000-square-foot CityPlace, a 72-acre, $425 million mixed-use development to open in fall 2000.

Tenants include: General Cinema and Sundance Theaters; Barnes & Noble; Equinox Health Club; Pottery Barn; Williams-Sonoma; FAO Schwarz; Restoration Hardware; Il Fornaio; Legal Sea Food; Red Eye Grill; Brooklyn Diner; and Commonwealth Brewing Co.

Chattanooga mall rehabbed

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Hamilton Place, the 1.4 million-square-foot superregional mall owned and managed by CBL & Associates Properties of Chattanooga, is undergoing a major renovation that will expand its food court and create an additional 6,600 square feet of space.

Other changes include new floors and carpet on the upper level; new interior landscaping; new seating areas, including sofas and oversized chairs; lighting and paint. Exterior changes include repaving the parking lot and upgrading all signage. The architectural firm of Law Kingdon, Wichita, Kan., is providing design and development of the renovation, which is expected to be complete in August.

Buckley/Shuler developing two projects in N.C.

CARY, N.C. -- Buckley/Shuler Properties, Atlanta, has acquired a 46-acre site here and expects to begin construction of a 450,000-square-foot power center this summer.

Centrum at Crossroads is located at the intersection of Dillard Road and Walnut Street in Cary, across the street from the Crossroads Shopping Center. Anchor tenants are expected to be announced soon.

Buckley/Shuler purchased the site from Centrum LLC, a private corporation based in Cary. Buckley/Shuler is also developing an 80,000-square-foot retail project at the Commerce Center on Capital Boulevard in North Raleigh.
