RETAILERS LATEST PILGRIMS TO ARRIVE IN PLYMOUTH

New England Development reports that the first phase of its Shops at 5 power center complex in Plymouth, Mass., will be fully open in January. Stores in the 425,000-square-foot first phase include BJ’s Wholesale Club, Kohl’s, The Sports Authority and 18 others. Many stores at the center are already open. Earlier in the development the project was named The Shops at Long Pond, but it was renamed after the nearby exit 5 off Route 3. The second and final phase will add another 50,000 square feet when it opens in the summer.

This is one of several retail projects springing up in Plymouth, a town best known for being the last stop for the Mayflower’s pilgrims in 1620. Since 2000 about 350 single-family homes have been built there yearly, according to the nonprofit Plymouth Regional Economic Development Foundation. The organization expects that to leap to about 450 annually, starting with 2004.
