WORLD CLASS

ICSC International Design Award finalists hail from 16 countries

The finalists for ICSC’s 28th International Design and Development Awards competition come from 16 countries, demonstrating that cutting-edge shopping center design is truly an international phenomenon. To be precise, this year’s honorees come from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

This competition has for nearly three decades honored the teams responsible for world-class retail projects, recognizing their vision, innovation and creativity.

The program does not recognize only architects, but also retail real estate owners, developers, designers, contractors and managers — all of which play vital roles in the creation of outstanding shopping destinations. Through a combination of hard work and the ability to innovate, these finalists share a common bond of professionalism and the ability to respond to the challenges of the global market.

The judging encompasses the general categories of “Renovation or Expansion of an Existing Project” and “Innovative Design and Construction of a New Project.” The size categories are: less than 150,000 square feet; 150,001-500,000 square feet; and more than 500,000 square feet.

The finalists’ projects will be displayed in a Hall of Honors at ICSC’s 2004 CenterBuild Conference, which is scheduled to be held Dec. 8-11 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The winners are to be announced at a special ceremony, which will be held the evening of Thursday, Dec. 9. For a preview, read on.
