FOR THOSE WHO PREFER MALLS, CITY HAS PLENTY

Keeping up with the competition is challenging in a city where major retail and shopping center projects are being built in rapid succession. This year Shanghai has become home to two of China’s largest malls: Super Brand Mall, a 240,000-square-meter (2.6 million-square-foot), 13-story project developed by Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group, which opened this summer in the financial district; and the 330,000-square-meter, seven-floor Shanghai Rainbow Mall, which was scheduled to partially open by year-end. Rainbow Mall, a center whose numerous anchors will include an underground Carrefour store and will stay open 24 hours a day, is being developed by Shanghai Gang Hong, a Hong Kong-based joint venture company.

Another intriguing project announced for Shanghai is the 58,125-square-meter Xiehe World Square shopping center, which will comprise five themed areas and feature replicas of such urban landmarks as Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as a full-scale model of the Titanic. Concord World Group of Hong Kong is the developer.

Most retail-related development is in new structures, but the Shanghai government is showing increasing interest in the refurbishment of traditional retail shopping streets and historic areas, such as Xintiandi, a former residential quarter.
