GLOBAL RETAIL TO STAR AT ICSC/MAPIC

Nike, Sephora, Lend-Lease, Rodamco and a host of the world’s other top retail industry leaders will be gathering to share their insights and expertise at the third annual ICSC/MAPIC Conference on Nov. 14, at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

The daylong conference, ICSC’s third collaboration with MAPIC, will focus on critical issues and challenges facing shopping centers worldwide as well as opportunities in the retail real estate sector.

Nike, one of the world’s best-known brands, will offer a “Global Perspective of the Changing World of Retail,” in which Howard Lichter, the company’s creative director, will discuss changing consumer lifestyles, the increasing importance of brands and the new and different ways retailers need to reach the ever-more-sophisticated consumer.

Branding will be the focus of yet another session in the morning, led by Jill McArdle, strategic development director for BDG McColl, London, and Tim Greenhaigh, creative director for Fitch, London.

The search for the “wow” factor in retail will be discussed by panelists Linda A. Miller, vice president of international business development for Taubman Centers, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Richard Mully, managing partner of Soros Real Estate Group, London; David J. Peek, partner of David J. Peek Associates, Tunbridge Wells, U.K.; and Phil Wren, vice president and associate director, head of retail and entertainment for HOK International, London.

Following an address by conference vice chairman Lucy Mori, U.K. manager for Paris-based Sephora, development issues will take center stage. One seminar, for instance, will cover occupancy costs, with a comparison of rent requirements for a 200-square-meter (2,152-square-foot) shop in 15 European countries.

Later, shopping center performance will be evaluated and compared through the eyes of retailers and investors. Looking at the retail issues will be Helene Prazowski, development director of Groupe Etam, Paris, and Gary Brown, senior vice president of real estate, Footlocker Europe, Vianen, the Netherlands; the investor’s point of view will be represented by Joost Bomhoff, managing director of Rodamco Europe NV, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The conference will be followed by the MAPIC trade exhibition, to be held Nov. 15 to Nov. 17 at the Palais des Festivals.
