David J. Contis, COO of The Macerich Co., is leaving the firm at the end of January to become president of Chicago-based Equity Group Investments, a private group controlled by legendary investor Sam Zell. Contis, who worked for Zell before joining Macerich, will advise Zell on a variety of real estate activities. “There’s no other job I would have left Macerich for other than this chance to return home to Chicago and work for Sam,” Contis said. “It’s a chance to broaden my horizons and do some international and mixed-use in addition to domestic work,” he said, though he added that he will continue to do retail. Mark S. Cosby is the new senior vice president for property development at Federated Department Stores. He will oversee store design and construction, energy services, real estate and licensed operations. Cosby, who was president of full-line stores at Sears, Roebuck and Co., will relocate to Federated’s Cincinnati headquarters from Chicago. Cosby has also been COO of fast-food chain KFC and chief development officer of restaurant conglomerate Yum Brands. Andrew Jennings, former president and COO of Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises, joined Cape Town, South Africa-based Woolworths as director of retail. The $2.5 billion conglomerate operates about 300 stores, including supermarkets and specialty apparel and convenience stores. TJX Cos. named Carol Meyrowitz CEO. She was president of the Boston-based retailer. Phoenix-based development firm Opus West hired Craig Esslinger as senior director of retail development. Esslinger, who was a development manager for Vestar, will oversee Opus’ activities in the southwestern U.S. Lake Bluff, Ill.-based Pine Tree Commercial Realty promoted Tim Roe to president. He was executive vice president. Newport News, Va.-based real estate services firm Drucker & Falk named brokers Alan E. Meetze and David Hudgins directors of commercial sales and leasing. Columbus, Ohio-based Casto hired Rich Roy and Adam Wolinetz to expand the company’s tenant representation business. Terry Salzman is Staubach Retail’s new senior vice president and market leader for South Florida. Salzman, who is relocating to Staubach’s Boca Raton, Fla., office from London, worked in development, leasing and management at Cushman & Wakefield. New York City-based real estate services firm Retail Consulting Services hired Roger D. Burghdorf as senior vice president. Burghdorf, who was senior executive vice president and director of leasing for Westfield, will be based in Los Angeles.
