NEW ENGLAND’S BUSINESS STRONG, DEVELOPERS SAY

BOSTON — The retail real estate industry continues to perform well in New England, despite the challenging national economy, said speakers at ICSC’s New England Idea Exchange.

“Things couldn’t be any better,” said John J. McWeeney, ICSC state director for Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. “We’ve got tenants lined up trying to get in good locations.”

About 1,000 people registered for the meeting, held at the Seaport Hotel at the World Trade Center.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino expressed appreciation for the new jobs and increased tax revenue that retail real estate development has brought to his city. “These great opportunities don’t often grab the headlines, but they are essential in the vitality of our city.”

Columbia, S.C.-based Edens & Avant is one of the firms exploring the region’s opportunities. Last year it bought 38 New England centers from Konover & Associates and plans further growth in the area, said CEO Terry S. Brown.
