TERRAZZO COMING TO GRAND RAPIDS

Terrazzo, a 54,000-square-foot fashion and specialty center in Grand Rapids, Mich., will feature home furnishings, a restaurant, a jeweler and a new gourmet grocery concept from D&W Food Centers. The center will serve the affluent communities of Ada, Cascade, East Grand Rapids and Forest Hills, all suburbs of Grand Rapids. The project, under development by the Hurwitz family of west Michigan, broke ground in late May and should open in spring 2003.

HSA COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE TO REDEVELOP ORLAND PARK PLACE

HSA Commercial Real Estate will redevelop a 10,000-square-foot outparcel at the edge of Orland Park (Ill.) Place, a 725,000-square-foot mall. Previously occupied by The Discovery Zone, the area has been divided into three separate spaces and sports a new facade. By the end of July, AT&T Wireless; Cosi, a sandwich restaurant; and Vitamin Shoppe had signed leases to move into the spaces. HSA Commercial Real Estate, Chicago, owns the outparcel along with several investment partners. The center has two levels of space featuring such tenants as Barnes & Noble, Cost Plus and Old Navy.

SLAWSON CONTINUING WORK ON NEWMARKET SQUARE, WICHITA

Slawson Cos. has started the second development phase for the retail portion of NewMarket Square, which opened in Wichita, Kan., last November. The mixed-use center, covering nearly 1 million square feet, features an outdoor retail portion anchored by Bed Bath & Beyond, Borders Books & Music, Old Navy and Wal-Mart. Other national retailers include Casual Corner Annex and Dress Barn. Wichita-based Slawson says it intends to include more upscale tenants for the second phase. At its completion, NewMarket Square will feature some 750,000 square feet of retail plus 218,000 square feet of office and hotel space.

MISSIONARY GROUP TO BUILD MIXED-USE CENTER IN NORTHBROOK

The Society of the Divine Word, a Techny, Ill.-based Roman Catholic missionary group, is planning a 450,000-square-foot, mixed-use development. North Shore Village, Northbrook, Ill., 25 miles north of Chicago, will be modeled after the so-called New Urbanism concept, with an emphasis on diverse and active elements in a compact environment. The project will feature a pharmacy, a bank, a fitness center, a gourmet grocery store, home furnishings, apparel stores, restaurants and service providers. The project is slated for a summer 2004 opening after a May 2003 ground-breaking.

PAGE TO DEVELOP ST. LOUIS PROJECT

Page Partners is planning to develop MLK Plaza, a 45,000-square-foot community center. A north St. Louis urban infill project anchored by a Save-A-Lot grocery store, the center is expected to feature such tenants as Fashion Cents, Foot Locker, JWG Beauty Supplies and One Price Clothing. Once opened and fully leased, the project is expected to generate some $400,000 in sales taxes annually for the city, which has approved $2.25 million in tax increment financing. It also received $500,000 in funding, because it falls into one of the city’s empowerment zones.

CONTINENTAL REAL ESTATE TO BUILD 800,000-SF CENTER IN GROVE CITY

An $84 million, 800,000-square-foot shopping center development in Grove City, Ohio, will begin construction this fall. The project, in an area south of Interstate 70 outside of Columbus, is being developed by Continental Real Estate, Columbus. A local analyst said the project will draw from a base of about 200,000 residents and that the area south of I-70 is underserved.

PLANO, TEXAS, REJECTS SHOPPING CENTER

The Plano (Texas) City Council turned down a proposal to rezone property to make way for a 177,000-square-foot, Kroger-anchored shopping center, The Dallas Morning News reported. Residents had concerns about the noise and traffic the center would have brought to the area.

TEXAS TOWN TO GET ITS FIRST CENTER

Sachse, Texas, a town of 14,000 people, could soon get its first shopping center, a Kroger-anchored development called Oak Grove Plaza, reported The Dallas Morning News. The development, still in the planning stages, will be situated on a 17-acre site.
