ICSC MEMBERS MEET THIS MONTH IN TORONTO

This year’s ICSC Canadian Convention Deal Making & Trade Exposition will be shorter than previous years’ meetings, but will cover some issues requested by members, said Dianne Lemm, who co-chaired the event’s planning committee and is vice president of mall services at Northwest Atlantic (Canada), Toronto.

“We’ve really tightened up the schedule,” Lemm said. The convention will be held Oct. 7-9 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building. In the past, members sometimes sacrificed almost an entire workweek at the event, which generally took place Tuesday through Friday. But a new Monday to Wednesday afternoon schedule leaves the two workdays at the end of the week intact.

In response to requests for greater attention to marketing of shopping centers, the afternoon of Oct. 8 will be devoted to presentations and roundtable discussions on the subject.

Members have also voiced concerns about a lack of new blood in the Canadian shopping center industry, so more than 50 college students will attend the convention to meet the human resources officers of various companies, Lemm said.

Among other meeting features are:

• An operations roundtable session dealing with maximizing common-area revenues, implementation of an effective tenant sales audit program, shopping center security, energy management in a deregulated market and lease dispute resolution;

• A panel discussion on growth through strategic partnership;

• Guest speakers to include Diane Francis, editor of Toronto’s National Post, and Ron MacLean, co-host of the CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada.”
