CENTERS KEY TO URBAN RENEWAL

Renovated and reconfigured shopping centers are helping to revitalize Canada’s urban spaces. A number of older centers of between 100,000 and 500,000 square feet have added new uses to meet changed community needs. Among recent examples:

North Hill — Calgary’s first enclosed shopping center when it opened in 1958, has undergone a C$25 million ($16 million) renovation and is to add two adjacent luxury condo towers now under construction.

Don Mills Town Centre — This 1960s plaza turned enclosed center is to be adapted by owner Cadillac Fairview over the next two years as a hybrid lifestyle center combining open-air and enclosed components.

Surrey Place Mall — The Surrey, British Columbia, center is morphing into a new entity called Central City, with the Technical University of British Columbia and a multistoried office tower to be added around the retail space. Completion is set for January 2003.

Meadowlark Mall — Located in Edmonton, Alberta, this mall has been partly replaced with multifamily residential, medical and government offices.
