A Debenhams department store in Plymouth, England, received a package that contained a deadly strain of tuberculosis that was supposed to have been delivered to a germ warfare base at Porton Down, Wilshire. Luckily, store staff noticed a label saying the package should only be handled in an approved laboratory, and they quickly contacted the local environmental health department. ...

Ironically, on the eve of the opening of Westcor Partners’ FlatIron Crossing in Broomfield, Colo., 30 counties, cities and towns in the state signed a so-called smart-growth pact that could limit future development. According to the pact, the cities and counties will plan for growth by sticking to master plans, coordinating development with neighboring jurisdictions and keeping development within boundaries. …

Staples has integrated its Staples.com venture into its brick-and-mortar stores through the installation of kiosks where customers can buy items not available at the store. Twenty pilot stores have the kiosks so far. …

British retailer Marks & Spencer is testing a new store format, called MSL, which will specialize in lingerie sales. Two 2,500-square-foot units will open in Germany and two others in Paris by Christmas. …

Major League Baseball denied the Minnesota Twins’ request to play a three-game series at a temporary, 25,000-seat outdoor field in the Mall of America’s parking lot, which was built on the site of the Twins’ former park, Metropolitan Stadium. The ballclub said it might try again next year.
