IN BRIEF

Gift cards

General Growth Properties is launching an American Express gift-card program at 80 of its 177 malls this year. The cards are good at any store in General Growth’s centers that accepts American Express. Meanwhile, The Macerich Co. has started a similar program at its 60 malls in partnership with Visa and U.S. Bancorp.

Taubman

The second annual “Style for the Cure” benefit will take place Sept. 27-Oct. 3 at Taubman Centers’ Mall at Short Hills (N.J.). At least 70 of the retailers there will donate a percentage of their sales over that period to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Simon

Simon Property Group has formed a partnership with energy provider Amersco, which will design and install energy-efficient devices in selected Simon centers. The company will study Simon’s use of lighting, HVAC and other systems to identify energy-saving opportunities.

Regal Entertainment

Youth-marketing firm 360 Youth is putting up 42-inch plasma-screen ad monitors at 50 Regal Entertainment Group theaters across the country. The screens, along with kiosks and other materials, will target consumers between 10 and 24 years old.

Forest City Enterprises

Forest City Enterprises’ South Bay Galleria, a 1 million-square-foot mall in Redondo Beach, Calif., has started a program called the South Bay Galleria Ambassadors. On weekends, employees wearing black aprons will go around helping customers with baggage and randomly handing out certificates for free items and services at the center, which is about 25 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

Rouse

The Rouse Co. expanded its Club Estrellas program to 11 of its 49 centers, including Fashion Show (Las Vegas), South Street Seaport (New York City) and Water Tower Place (Chicago). Mexicana Airlines passengers flying from Mexico City to cities with participating Rouse centers get discounts at stores and restaurants. The firm originated the Estrellas program at North Star Mall, San Antonio.

Coreland

Coreland Cos., a Tustin, Calif.-based real estate services firm, won the management contracts for three separately and privately owned California open-air centers. The properties, in Dana Point, Laguna Hills, and Valencia, total 567,000 square feet. Coreland already manages about 100 commercial properties in the state.

Shopco, Taubman

Two Detroit-area shopping centers are reporting more sales and fewer problems following last month’s introduction of a policy requiring patrons under 18 to be escorted by an adult over 21. When the policy took effect at Shopco Advisory Group’s Eastland Center (Harper Woods, Mich.), traffic fell 18 percent from last year. But sales jumped 29 percent, Shopco says. Before Taubman Centers’ Fairlane Town Center (Dearborn, Mich.) adopted the policy, weekend nights could see as many as 450 expulsions. Since then there has not been a single incident of disorderly conduct, the mall reports.
