JOYE AWARDED TROPHÉE D’HONNEUR BY CNCC

Former ICSC Europe chairman Charles Joye has been awarded the Trophée d’Honneur by the Conseil National des Centres Commerciaux (the French Council of Shopping Centers), the first non-Frenchman to be accorded the honor.

The award came as a total surprise to its recipient.

“I went to the CNCC congress in Paris just out of sheer professional interest. The award of the Annual Trophy was totally unexpected,” Joye said. “I was, of course, most delighted to receive the trophy, which had never before been given to a foreigner, especially when you think of the fact that I am a Swiss, and we are not even members of the Common Market.”

The award was presented at the council’s 10th annual conference, held in Paris on June 17 and 18. Previous Trophée d’Honneur honorees include Raoul d’Heucqueville, former chairman of French development firm SÉGÉCÉ.

“Ever year, we give an award to a personality who has many merits in this industry. This year, we gave it to Charles Joye,” said Jean-Michel Silberstein, secretary-general of the Council. “He is someone who has worked hard to raise standards in this industry.”

Joye, the founder of Geneva-based consulting firm Retail and Development Services SA, resigned this year as ICSC Europe chairman, and “we wanted to recognize his work there as well,” Silberstein said.

Joye took part in the creation of ICSC’s European Committee in the mid-1970s, chaired two European conferences and the European Award Committee, and launched the Jean-Louis Solal Marketing Award. He served as part-time secretary-general of the independent ICSC Europe; when that office was reintegrated with ICSC in North America, he became the group’s third chairman until earlier this year. An ICSC Distinguished Service Award winner in 1991, Joye also was honored at the association’s 26th Annual European Conference, held in Turin, Italy, in March.

“It is one thing to be honored as an old friend as I have been these last months; now I really have the feeling I must deserve it,” Joye said. “Somehow, I will have to find a way to continue to give back to the shopping center industry and ICSC members what the many remarkable people I have had the chance to meet in all these years have brought me.”

The next annual meeting of the Conseil National des Centres Commerciaux, which will include a conference and trade fair, will be held June 17 and 18, 2002, in Paris.
