REGIS STAYING ON TOP

The world’s undisputed salon giant is Minneapolis-based Regis Corp., which owns 23 targeted international brands, with 8,549 units worldwide. Sales for 2001 were $1.3 billion, and the company expects to top the $3 billion mark in the next 12 to 18 months.

Its newest concept, Mia & Maxx Hair Studio, is a trendy, upscale salon offering cuts and color, geared to 18-to-28-year-olds. The chain has 22 locations in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington state. About 25 new salons will open yearly, averaging 1,000 to 1,200 square feet in strong regional malls.

“There are already plenty of salons in [urban locations] going after that particular demographic,” said Gordon Nelson, vice president of fashion education and marketing at Regis. “But when you go into regional malls, where half of America lives, there’s no one there that’s going after this market.”

This spring Regis purchased Jean Louis David, a leading European salon chain with 1,166 units worldwide. There are nine in New York City, and Regis plans to expand to between 200 and 300 locations throughout the metropolitan area over the next three to five years. The company also plans to introduce the concept to Boston and Philadelphia.

Regis has also begun introducing basic hair color services to Supercuts, a low-price concept whose customer base is 80 percent male.
