STIRLING CANDIDATE

Stirling Properties’ Maurin picked as ICSC’s 2004–2005 chairman

BY EDMUND MANDER

The ICSC Board of Trustees elected James E. Maurin, a founder and principal of one of the Gulf South’s largest commercial real estate companies, the organization’s 45th chairman. He succeeds Kathleen M. Nelson, head of the real estate portfolio at TIAA-CREF.

Maurin, 56, the chairman and cofounder of Covington, La.–based Stirling Properties, has earned a reputation as one of the retail real estate industry’s leading advocates in Washington, D.C.; he has served on ICSC’s Government Relations Committee for more than 10 years. He has also been a trustee (1997–2003), vice president of the Southern Division (1998–1999), state director for Louisiana (1995–1997) and chairman of the Spring Convention (1999).

“Becoming chairman of ICSC is truly the greatest honor of my professional life,” said Maurin. “Considering the contribution that ICSC has made to both my personal career and Stirling Properties, it is a privilege to be given the opportunity to serve the organization over the next year.”

Maurin graduated first in his class, with an MBA from Tulane University in 1972. In 1975 he and two college friends — Roger Ogden and Gerald Songy — founded Maurin-Ogden Properties, which merged with brokerage firm Stirling & Associates in 1988 to form Stirling Properties. With 15 offices and 280 people throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma, Stirling has developed more than $300 million worth of properties to date, including retail, office and residential.

Maurin lives in Hammond, La., with his wife, Lillian. They are the parents of Carla Corley, Caroline Gallinaro and Marli Maurin.

Also at the convention’s annual meeting of members, the following were elected to initial three-year terms as trustees:

Alan J. Barocas, senior vice president, Gap Inc., San Francisco; David C. Bloom, CEO, Chelsea Property Group Inc., Roseland, N.J.; Terry Steven Brown, CEO, Edens & Avant, Columbia, S.C.; Thomas J. McEwen, president, Poag & McEwen Lifestyle Centers, Memphis, Tenn.; and Valerie Richardson, vice president of real estate, The Container Store, Dallas.

Klipper, COO, Barnes & Noble Inc., New York City; Matthew S. Dominski, managing director, Polaris Capital, Northbrook, Ill.; Michael J. Lebovitz (Eastern); René Tremblay (Canadian); Robert F. Welanetz, SCSM (Southern) — and Secretary-Treasurer Charles Grossman. Maurin also appointed John D. Griffith, senior vice president for property development at Target Corp., who joins existing at-large members John L. Bucksbaum, CSM; Kemper Freeman Jr. (Government Relations); Christopher J. Niehaus (Investment and Employee Retirement); and Jeffrey R. Sinkey.
