IN BRIEF

General Growth

Nordstrom will open its first department store in Massachusetts, at General Growth Properties’ 1.2 million-square-foot Natick (Mass.) Mall. The opening is scheduled for 2007. The new store is part of an expansion that is to include 550,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, as well as residential towers.

Westfield America

Westfield America Trust plans to begin a $120 million redevelopment of its 1 million-square-foot Westfield Shoppingtown Connecticut Post by year-end. The center is located in Milford, Conn., 10 miles southwest of New Haven. The center will receive about 100,000 square feet of additional specialty store space as well as new anchors, which have not been named. The current anchors are Filene’s, J.C. Penney and Sears. Elsewhere in Connecticut, Westfield plans to redevelop its Westfield Shoppingtown Meriden mall.

S.R. Weiner

S.R. Weiner & Associates is opening three centers in New England in the fall — two in Massachusetts and one in Connecticut. The Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, an 820,000-square-foot, open-air center in Millbury, Mass., about 40 miles west of Boston, will include Kohl’s, Old Navy and Target. Tenants at the 430,000-square-foot Derby Street Shoppes lifestyle center in Hingham, Mass., 17 miles southeast of Boston, will include Barnes & Noble and REI. The 420,000-square-foot Shoppes at Farmington Valley, Canton, Conn., about 15 miles west of Hartford, will be anchored by Dick’s Sporting Goods and Shaw’s. S.R. Weiner is adding about 500,000 square feet to the 800,000-square-foot, Augusta (Maine) Marketplace. The addition, which the Chestnut Hill, Mass.–based developer expects to complete by the fall of next year, will make Augusta Marketplace the largest open-air center in the state.

KGI

KGI Properties is spending about $20 million to renovate its 237,000-square-foot Woburn (Mass.) Mall. The mall, which is located about 12 miles northwest of Boston, will get an additional 20,000 square feet, including a Sports Authority store. KGI expects to complete the first phase, including new streetfront facades, by the end of this year and to begin the second phase next year.

Wilder

The Boston-based Wilder Cos. is converting three levels of The New England Life Building in the Back Bay area of Boston to 150,000 square feet of retail. Beacon Capital Partners owns the property. Wilder says it expects to have the space ready for retailers in the spring.

Stanbery

Stanbery Development plans to break ground this fall on The Shoppes at Brookfield (Conn.), about 33 miles northwest of New Haven. The Columbus, Ohio–based development company expects to open this 35,000-square-foot lifestyle center next June.
