To the Editor:

Nancy Cohen is indeed to be congratulated on her book, America’s Marketplace: The History of Shopping Centers [excerpted in the May issue of SCT].

However, I think that she should have made reference to Larry Smith’s important contribution to the development of this great industry. It was Larry’s analytical mind, allied to Victor [Gruen]’s architectural genius, that led to the creation of so many milestones, profitable for both landlords and tenants.

Shopping Towns U.S.A.: The Planning of Shopping Centers, written by Larry and Victor, was the first attempt to describe the various facets of the development process.

Larry Smith certainly deserves recognition in any history of the shopping center industry.
