FROM THE HALL OF FAME TO THE MALL HE CAME

LAS VEGAS — Believing in oneself is crucial to becoming successful, says Tommy Lasorda, and he certainly doesn’t lack confidence in himself.

The Baseball Hall of Fame member and former Los Angeles Dodgers manager provided his audience with this and other advice during a motivational breakfast speech at this year’s ICSC Spring Convention.

When he became manager of the Dodgers in 1977, someone asked him if he was concerned about filling the shoes of the previous manager, Walter Alston, a Hall of Famer who had won more than 2,000 games in his career. Lasorda replied that he was more worried about the person who was going to have to fill his shoes when the time came.

“I wanted to be the best manager in baseball,” he told his listeners. “I’m sure you want to be the best at what you want to do.”
