KATHLEEN NELSON ELECTED 2003-04 CHAIRMAN

Kathleen Nelson is the first financial services industry executive to head ICSC.

LAS VEGAS — ICSC’s Board of Trustees has elected Kathleen M. Nelson, who heads the real estate portfolio at the giant TIAA-CREF pension fund, the organization’s 44th chairman. She is the first financial services industry executive to head the 44,000-member association.

As managing director of TIAA-CREF’s $40 billion mortgage and real estate portfolio — $6 billion of it retail — Nelson is one of the industry’s most important financial players. The private pension fund is one of the largest in the United States, and Nelson has collaborated with the industry’s leading developers on the financing of many of the country’s premier malls.

“I look forward to strengthening the dialogue and cooperation between the investor and the retail and owner/developer communities that make up this association,” said Nelson, who was elected during ICSC’s annual Spring Convention.

Nelson takes over from Gary D. Rappaport, SCSM, SCMD, CLS, who served for the 2002-2003 term. Rappaport is president and CEO of the McLean, Va.-based Rappaport Cos.

Nelson’s involvement with ICSC goes back about 20 years, during which she has represented the industry’s interests in the public and private arenas. Last year she lobbied Congress as part of ICSC’s successful effort to obtain from the government a guarantee of financial help with insurance claims arising from any future terrorist attacks in the United States. She represented ICSC at the White House when President Bush signed the legislation in November. Most recently, she served as secretary-treasurer of the association.

Also during the convention, at the annual meeting of members at the Las Vegas Hilton, the following were elected to initial three-year terms as trustees: Peter E. Baccile, managing director, JP Morgan, New York City; Martin J. Cicco, managing director, Merrill Lynch, New York City; Albert A. Corti, CLS, principal, The Corti Gilchrist Partnership, San Diego; Mary Lou Fiala, president and COO, Regency Centers, Jacksonville, Fla.; Elise Jaffe, senior vice president of real estate, Dress Barn, Suffern, N.Y.; Jeff Mooney, chairman, A&W Food Services of Canada, North Vancouver, British Columbia; Patrick E. Peery, senior vice president of real estate, Kohl’s Department Stores, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Beverly A. Ricks, principal, Lend Lease Real Estate Investments, Atlanta; Glenn J. Rufrano, CEO, New Plan Excel Realty Trust, New York City; Mark Shulman, COO, Retail Brand Alliance, Enfield, Conn.; Charles P. “Chuck” Stilley, president, AMC Realty, Kansas City, Mo.; Ian Thomas, chairman, Thomas Consultants, Vancouver, British Columbia; and Eric S. Zorn, president, Wal-Mart Realty, Bentonville, Ark.

The board also appointed ICSC former Vice Chairman John T. Riordan a nonvoting lifetime trustee. Riordan, who was president of the association from 1986 to 2000, joins fellow lifetime trustees Albert Sussman, CMD, CSM, former executive vice president, and Leonard L. Farber, CSM, ICSC’s first chairman.

Trustees whose terms of service ended in May are Paul R. Carter, formerly of Wal-Mart Realty; A. Larry Chapman, Wells Fargo Bank; Ronald P. Douglass, CLS, Douglass & Co.; Stanley L. Eichelbaum, SCMD, Marketing Developments; Bryan J. Fields, formerly of The Home Depot; Christopher A. Fox, Regis Corp.; Julian E. Markham, Glengate Holdings; James E. Maurin, Stirling Properties; Richard T. O’Connell Jr., Talbots; Thomas H. Purcell, Spring Creek Investors; and Donald P. Wright, Safeway.

Elected to the ICSC Executive Committee were the five divisional vice presidents — Patrick S. Donahue (Western), who replaces Thomas H. Purcell; Norris R. Eber, SCSM, CLS, (Central); Stephen D. Lebovitz (Eastern); René Tremblay (Canadian); Robert F. Welanetz, SCSM (Southern) — and Secretary-Treasurer Charles Grossman, who replaces Nelson. Nelson also appointed David L. Mackie, vice president of real estate, Nordstrom; and Jeffrey R. Sinkey, vice president of real estate, Abercrombie & Fitch, who join existing at-large members John L. Bucksbaum, CSM, F. Kemper Freeman Jr. (Government Relations) and Christopher J. Niehaus (Investment and Employee Retirement).

Rounding out the Executive Committee are the five immediate past chairmen: Rappaport, John M. Ingram, Robert L. Ward, William H. McCabe Jr. and Richard S. Sokolov.
