RAPPAPORT ELECTED 2002-2003 ICSC CHAIRMAN

Rappaport is a dedicated advocate for the industry, colleagues say.

ICSC’s Board of Trustees named Gary D. Rappaport chairman at its 2002-2003 organizational meeting in the Las Vegas Hilton.

Rappaport, SCSM, SCMD, CLS, who is president and CEO of the Vienna, Va.-based Rappaport Cos., becomes the 43rd chairman of the 40,000-member organization. As head of a company that builds, buys and manages smaller shopping centers, his professional background reflects that of many of ICSC’s members. Today The Rappaport Cos. owns 22 centers throughout the mid-Atlantic region, with a total of more than 4 million square feet.

The new chairman’s involvement with ICSC began 20 years ago, just as he was embarking on his career with the purchase of his first shopping center. Since then, Rappaport, 51, has been a dedicated advocate for the shopping center industry; he has lobbied at the federal and state government levels on a wide range of issues, calling for the collection of Internet sales taxes and requesting government action to make terrorism insurance available and affordable. An ICSC trustee since 1998, he has served as vice president of the Eastern Division and vice chairman of operations for the national Government Relations Committee. In addition, Rapapport was appointed to the Committee on ICSC PAC Management in 2000.

Rappaport succeeds John M. Ingram, vice chairman of The Mills Corp., Arlington, Va.

At the annual meeting of members, the following were elected to initial three-year terms as trustees: James W. Cherry Jr., vice president of real estate, Dillard’s, Little Rock, Ark.; Patrick S. Donahue, senior vice president and COO, Donahue Schriber, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Keith C. Eyrich, president of retail properties, The Irvine Co., Newport Beach, Calif.; John D. Griffith, senior vice president of property development, Target Corp., Minneapolis; Stephen D. Lebovitz, president, CBL & Associates Properties, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Joel T. Murphy, president of the retail division, Cousins Properties, Atlanta; Mark E. Pasquerilla, chairman, CEO and president, Crown American Realty Trust, Johnstown, Pa.; L. Peter Sharpe, president and CEO, Cadillac Fairview Corp., Toronto; and David C. Zoba, executive vice president and general counsel, Galyan’s Trading Co., Plainfield, Ind.

Retiring trustees are Bradley N. Blake, Blake Hunt Ventures, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Robert J. DiNicola, Zale Corp., Irving, Texas; Frederick O. Evans Jr., CSM, Evans Development, Newport Beach, Calif.; Steven B. Kaplan, Steven B. Kaplan Co., Atherton, Calif.; Michael Lowenkron, J.C. Penney Co., Dallas; Seymore Obront, Oberfeld Snowcap, Toronto; Lee H. Wagman, Trizec Properties, Los Angeles; Philip J. Ward, Cigna Investments, Hartford, Conn.; and Scott A. Wolstein, Developers Diversified Realty Corp., Beachwood, Ohio.

Purcell (Western); Rene Tremblay (Canadian); Robert F. Welanetz, SCSM, (Southern) — and Secretary-Treasurer Kathleen M. Nelson. In addition, the chairman appointed John L. Bucksbaum, Paul Carter and Christopher A. Fox to the committee. Two additional positions have been added this year: Kemper Freeman Jr. (Government Relations) and Christopher J. Niehaus (Investment and Employee Retirement).

Rounding out the Executive Committee are Leonard L. Farber, CSM, ICSC’s first chairman and trustee for life; and the five immediate past chairmen: Ingram; Robert L. Ward; William H. McCabe Jr.; Richard S. Sokolov; and Drew Alexander.
