JAMES B. GRIMMER, 81

James B. Grimmer

James B. Grimmer, a veteran ICSC member and industry pioneer, died March 12. He was 81.

In 1960 Grimmer developed Eastwood Mall, Birmingham, Ala., the first enclosed regional mall in the U.S. Southeast. About two years after Eastwood’s opening, he founded Grimmer Realty Co., Birmingham, and went on to develop more than 8 million square feet of retail space throughout the region.

Grimmer was an active member of ICSC, lobbying on behalf of the industry at its Congressional Contacts Meetings. In his honor, Sen. Richard C. Shelby, R-Ala., placed a tribute to him in the Congressional Record, calling him “a dedicated community leader and family man … who brought opportunity to many in the Southeast.” Grimmer built more than 30 shopping centers, which Shelby noted “helped to spur business and economic development in the region.”
