EUROPEAN SHOPPING CENTRE AWARDS PRESENTED

Outstanding shopping center development and redevelopment projects were honored in April, as ICSC presented its yearly European Shopping Centre Awards. The ceremony was part of the 27th Annual ICSC European Conference and Exhibition, held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The entries this year showed some clear trends. Projects are getting larger, and many more are being built in town, including smaller cities and towns that would previously not have been considered suitable locations. Judges also saw a greater focus on projects that integrate centers into their environment, drawing from historical references, said Awards Committee Chairman Arcadio Gil Pujol, managing director of Madrid, Spain-based retail advisory firm Lasba. More new centers are being built in southern Europe, while in the north, renovation is more evident.

Other trends are less real estate-oriented. Operating hours are slowly increasing, and retail continues to consolidate, Gil added. Yet despite these challenges, this year’s winners were of an exceptional standard, he said.

“The chosen centers provide lessons for the industry and set examples from which we can all draw,” Gil said.

The first award, for refurbishment, was presented to Rodamco France for its work on Centre Commercial Lyon La Part-Dieu, Lyon, France. The firm spent 25 million euros ($22.4 million) to modernize the 220,000-square-meter (2.4 million-square-foot) mall, with 60 of the 260 tenants renovating their stores as well.

In the new center (medium) category, the award was given to MadeiraShopping, Madeira, Portugal, developed by Sonae Imobiliária. The 26,600-square-meter center blends traditional local architecture with bright facades and landscaping.

Commendations in this category were given to Ségécé, for Centre Commercial Courier, Annecy, France; and to ECE Projektmanagement, for Galerie Dominikanska, Wroclaw, Poland.

The award for new center (large) was presented to Ségécé, for Centre Commercial International Val d’Europe, Serris, France. Located near the Disney parks outside Paris, the 215 million-euro center combines an Auchan hypermarket, nine other anchors, a food court, traditional mall retail and an open-air factory outlet center within 82,000 square meters.

Commendations in this category were given to Multi Development Corp. International, for Forum Algarve in Faro, Portugal; and to Grupo Eroski & Promodeico, for Parque Principado, Paredes-Lugones, Asturias, Spain.

Earning a commendation in the new center (specialized) category was Foruminvest/Stable International, for its Batavia Stad Outlet Shopping, Lelystad, the Netherlands. No award was given in this category.

More than 500 retailers, developers, designers and other professionals were in attendance at the three-day conference and exhibition.
