ICSC announces its Class of ’06 graduates
More than 100 professionals will receive a CLS, CMD or CSM designation this year. These executives form a disparate group in terms of geography and experience, but they all share a common interest: the promotion of professional excellence in the retail real estate industry. The designations are awarded to candidates who pass a comprehensive examination. The certification is not a diploma representing successful completion of course work alone. It stands for competence, indeed mastery, of one’s specialization as a result of both knowledge — however obtained — and experience, which can only be obtained on the job. The content of the examinations leans heavily in the direction of on-the-job experience.
ICSC’s newest global professional designation, Certified Development, Design and Construction Professional (CDP) is designed to elevate the professional standards in the fields of shopping center development, design and construction. The inaugural CDP examination will be offered in Phoenix during ICSC’s annual CenterBuild Conference on Dec. 4, 2007.
ICSC is offering the Certified Leasing Specialist examination via computer at locations in North America. Testing will take place the last weeks of September and October. The North American version of Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM) and Certified Marketing Director (CMD) examinations will be administered on Oct. 15, 2007 in New Orleans in conjunction with the Fall Conference. The application deadline is Sept. 5 2007. For shopping professionals who practice outside North America, the global CSM and CMD examinations will be offered in Belgium, Colombia, Mexico, Singapore, Turkey and United Arab Emirates at the International School for Professional Development. The contents of the global examinations are parallel to the North American versions. However, items that are specifically designed to test a concept that pertains exclusively to marketing or managing shopping centers in North America will not be tested. The examinations will be administered in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
The schedule for examinations and application deadlines for the rest of the year are as follows: The CDP examination will be held Dec. 4, 2007 in Phoenix. The application deadline is Oct. 9, 2007.
The CLS examinations will be held at Thomson Prometric Testing Centers throughout North America Sept. 24 - Sept. 28. The application deadline is Aug. 24, 2007. CLS exams will also be held Oct. 29-Nov. 2. The application deadline is Sept. 28, 2007. The global versions of the Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM) and Certified Marketing Director (CMD) exams will be held Feb. 10, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey. The application deadline is Jan. 10, 2007. The global CSM and CMD exams will also be held June 9, 2007, in Bogotá, Colombia, with an application deadline of May 8, 2007; on June 14, 2007, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with an application deadline of May 14, 2007; on June 30, 2007, in Brussels, Belgium with an application deadline of May 30, 2007; on Sept. 22, 2007, in Singapore with an application deadline of Aug. 22, 2007; and on Oct. 27, 2007, in Mexico City, with an application deadline of Sept. 27, 2007.
The application deadline for Senior Certified Leasing Specialist (SCLS), Senior Certified Shopping Center Manager (SCSM) and Senior Certified Marketing Director (SCMD) designations is May 8, 2007. The senior CSM and CMD designations are for individuals currently holding a CSM and/or CMD certification. Beginning this year, all active CLSs with approximately three years of experience from the time they achieved their initial designation will automatically achieve senior-level status.
The class of 2006 is quite a diverse group. This year’s designees come from North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia, with backgrounds as varied as sports management, accounting and engineering.

De Vore, marketing manager of Montebello (Calif.) Town Center, pursued one dream career and then found a new one, all in a short time. “I’ve always been an avid sports lover,” she said. The 28-year-old interned at Sports Placement Service, a Hollywood, Calif.-based merchandising management agency, while studying at UCLA. At Sports Placement, her duties involved assisting the famous clients during personal appearances and autograph sessions. She once escorted Ali to one of his daughter’s first boxing matches, an event she likened to walking with a deity. “I don’t think any other icon evokes the response he gets from people,” she said. But practicality eventually intruded. “It was something I loved, but it didn’t pay the bills,” she said. “It was a great learning experience, to learn not to be nervous around celebrities.” De Vore joined the marketing group at Woodland Hills, Calif.-based NewMark Merrill Co. She worked on all the company’s projects in Southern California. Four years later she joined The Macerich Co., where she remains and where the skills and training of her sports days have come in handy. De Vore does not miss the old days, though. “The shopping center industry is much more fun,” she said. “There are so many people you can reach out to.” The cutthroat reputation of the sports world is no exaggeration, she says, so the cooperation in the shopping center industry even among competitors is refreshing. “In sports, no one talks to anyone, just in case they’d steal an idea,” De Vore said. “Here even competitors want each other to succeed.” Thus, the industry has made a new convert. Translating experience between continents is not as hard as some may think, he says. Engineering and math principles do not vary by country. In the same way, experienced shopping center professionals can easily apply their professional expertise to maximize the value of a shopping center portfolio, taking into account pertinent legislation, he says. Getting the CSM essentially validates this idea. Not that Hofer easily found time to prepare for the exam. In fact, he almost literally took the exam at the last minute, only finding out that it was being given just after he had enrolled for the second-level course in Dubai. “Due to work commitments, my preparations consisted of a few hours’ study in addition to the CSM level two course,” Hofer said. “The key preparations for me were over 10 years of experience and several university qualifications.” Dennis Kemp, CSM
After working in Michigan for a while, he moved to Atlanta in 1990 and shortly afterward was hired by Equitable Real Estate as a senior mall accountant at Phipps Plaza. “It married my accounting world with my retail world,” he said. Kemp became head of lease administration at Equitable’s Compass Retail management division. But the corporate headquarters life again rankled. “I’m more dynamic, fluid, a real think-out-of-the-box guy,” Kemp said. When an accounting position opened up at a local General Growth center, Kemp went for it and has progressed steadily, from senior accountant at Cumberland Mall to assistant general manager of NorthPoint mall in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, Ga., and then to manager of Perimeter Mall. But his accounting skills and attention to detail continue to be useful. During his year at NorthPoint, for example, the center celebrated both its 10th anniversary and the openings of a slew of new stores. “We built out 33 new stores in 10 months, because of the 10-year lease rollover,” Kemp said. The organizational skills of an accountant were critical to track what was opening when. Kemp opted to take the exam to test himself, with the help of the mentoring program that General Growth has created for those seeking ICSC certifications. “I signed up and was immediately inundated with materials,” he said. The support was more than useful, particularly for someone with a long career path. In a few years, he says, he would like to pursue the senior-level designation. “The last time I prepared for an exam like this, we chiseled our answers in stone.” |
She has brushed shoulders with such sports legends as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Ali, Sandy Koufax and Joe Namath. But dreams of becoming a female Jerry Maguire have brought a whole new career to Adrienne De Vore, CMD.
The globalization of the shopping center business also means the globalization of its professionals and its accreditations. A case in point is Thomas Hofer, newly minted CSM and the retail properties director at Aswaq Management & Services, a development firm in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The engineer-turned-manager has also worked for leading developers and property owners in his native Australia, as well as in Saudi Arabia and China. “Early in my working career, I had some exposure to the commercial and retail property sector while working as an engineer for Lend Lease Technology that would later contribute to my career change,” Hofer said. During his 10-year career, he has worked with various companies, including Colliers International and Australian development firm Beville Group. Today Hofer works with Aswaq client Dubai Properties on projects that include The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, a 2.2 million-square-foot, mixed-used project that contains 770,000 square feet of retail space.
In a career that has taken him from accounting to a newly earned CSM, Dennis Kemp has taken the path less traveled. “After college I went into public accounting and just hated it,” said Kemp, manager of General Growth Properties’ Perimeter Mall, in Atlanta. “It was too general. I never got to be a part of anybody’s business.”
