Home Depot to open 200 stores

The Home Depot says it will open 200 stores in North America this year. The home improvement retailer opened 64 stores on the continent during last year’s fourth quarter. It now operates 1,532 stores worldwide, of which 1,370 are in the United States.

Jos. A. Bank to roll out 50 stores

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers plans to open 50 stores this year, including two in North Carolina this spring. The men’s apparel retailer now operates more than 160 stores in 32 states.

Galyan’s Trading company coming to New York City area

Galyan’s Trading Company plans to open a 100,000-square-foot sports and outdoor equipment store in the Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City, N.Y., in early October. Simon Property Group owns the mall.

Pacific Sunwear to open 75 new stores

Pacific Sunwear of California plans to open 75 new stores this year while closing 12. The Anaheim, Calif.-based apparel retailer said it will open 61 PacSun stores, four PacSun outlets and 10 D.e.m.o. units across the country.

Publix opening stores

Publix Super Markets says it will open 69 stores in the United States this year. As of the beginning of the year, the Lakeland, Fla.-based company had 741 stores in Southern states. It opened 57 stores in 2002.

Staples to use renewable energy

Staples says it plans to boost its reliance on renewable power sources — solar, wind, biomass, landfill gas — to 5 percent. Such sources currently account for less than 3 percent of the chain’s energy use.

Dollar stores multiply

Dollar General opened 81 stores in the United States in February, bringing its total to 6,192 units. Family Dollar opened 34 U.S. units that month, making its total 4,753.

Michaels to open new concept

Arts and crafts retailer Michaels Stores will test a new concept called Recollections at two locations in the Dallas area this summer. The stores, which will sell materials for scrapbooks, will average between 5,000 and 6,000 square feet. Its regular stores measure about 19,000 square feet. Michaels operates 768 Michaels stores in 48 states and Canada.

Spartan to close 13 Food Towns

Grocery company Spartan Stores will close 13 Food Town stores in the Toledo, Ohio, area. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based company said the stores fell below financial expectations, affecting the company’s cash flow. Spartan also said it may sell the remaining 26 units in its Food Town chain, all of which are located in Ohio and Michigan. Spartan also operates grocery chains Family Fare, Glen’s Markets and Prevo’s.

Kohl’s to expand in United States

Kohl’s plans to open about 80 new stores this year. The chain opened 28 units in the Los Angeles area on March 7 and intends to open 45 more this fall, with concentrations in Arizona and Nevada. It also has openings planned for Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Sears plans HDTV promotion

Sears, Roebuck & Co. will use high-definition TVs in 870 of its full-line stores to display customized, regional advertising, while simultaneously marketing the HDTVs themselves.
