MACERICH EXPANDS REDMOND TOWN CENTER WITH HOTEL

The Macerich Co., Santa Monica, Calif., is adding two major facilities on the site of its Redmond (Washington) Town Center — a department store for patrons to shop in, and an upscale hotel for others to stay a while.

The 1.4 million-square-foot lifestyle center will feature a new 110,000-square-foot Bon Marche, scheduled to open in fall 2003, making it the first full-line department store at the Redmond Town Center.

Plans also call for a seven-story, 262-room Marriott hotel with about 10,000 square feet of ballroom/convention space. The planned hotel would adjoin a 180-room Residence Inn by Marriott, which opened in 1999. Thanks to a city-approved increase in the amount of commercial space that can be put on the site, the hotel is just one of several facilities that will be developed there in the future.

Redmond Town Center opened in 1997 as a mixed-use lifestyle center featuring retail, office and entertainment components. The existing 523,000 square feet of Main Street retail and big-box space includes Eddie Bauer, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Larry’s Market. With such entertainment draws as an eight-screen Loews Cineplex and a live theater venue, Redmond also provides community facilities, with headquarters for the Lake Washington School district, and a seasonal Sunday farmer’s market.

“Now with Bon Marche at one end of the core retail area and the hotel on the other end, we become even more of a destination for residents of Seattle’s Eastside area,” Kim Campbell, Redmond Town Center’s senior property manager, said in a written description of the project.
