RESULTS RELEASED FOR REVAMPED MALL EXAMINATIONS

The new testing format for ICSC’s Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM) and Certified Marketing Director (CMD) professional designations was administered for the first time in October. Eighty-three shopping center managers have earned CSM designations while 68 marketing directors have been given CMDs.

“Competency and professionalism are highly important to the shopping center industry,” said Michael P. Kercheval, ICSC president and CEO. “Achieving the CSM or CMD designation indicates that the accredited professional has a proven track record of experience and success within their discipline and is now counted among the most professional and highly qualified in the industry.”

The CSM and CMD examinations were revised last year and now consist of a single test featuring 130 multiple-choice questions and four questions based on a fictitious case study in a business plan format. The results from the two sections of the exam are combined to create a single score. Candidates who do not pass are required to retake the exam because there is only one passing score for the entire test.

“The new exam requires the candidate to be knowledgeable about and use tools that better reflect what the candidate in today’s industry needs to be successful in managing shopping centers,” said Clinton Cochran, SCSM, chairman of the CSM Admissions and Governing Committee and vice president of management at Kravco Co., King of Prussia, Pa. The revised examinations were developed from an industrywide survey of accredited individuals based on their knowledge, experience and job descriptions throughout the United States and Canada and were designed by Chauncey Group International, a subsidiary of Princeton, N.J.-based Educational Testing Service.

ICSC has also released a list of members who were awarded its other professional designations last year. Fifty-seven people took the Certified Leasing Specialist (CLS) exam and 34 of those, or 59.6 percent, passed. Of the 91 individuals who took the CMD exam in 2001, 68, or 75 percent, were certified. Of the 117 people who took the CSM exam, 83, or 71 percent, passed. In addition, six individuals were awarded both the Senior Certified Shopping Center Manager (SCSM) and the Senior Certified Marketing Director (SCMD) designations, while three were awarded SCMD designations and 18 earned SCSM designations. Two people received ASM designations, and one an AMD designation.
