REVAMPED CSM, CMD TESTS TO BE ADMINISTERED

The new testing format for the Certified Shopping Center Manager and Certified Market Director exams, designed with the help of industry executives in conjunction with the Chauncey Group International, will be administered for the first time on Oct. 23, 2001 in Orlando, Fla. prior to the Fall Management and Marketing Conference.

The new exams will be administered in two sections with a break in between. Candidates will have three and one-half hours in the morning section to answer 130 multiple-choice questions. In the afternoon, candidates will have two hours to complete the situational judgment section. The situational judgment section of the examination consists of four essays that require a review of background material. The task is to concisely respond to the questions in the space provided, which is about one side of a page per question.

The two sections of the test are combined to create a single score. Failing candidates will be required to retake the entire examination. Candidates will be required to pass the examination in order to receive the designation.

ICSC has released a list of those members who received professional accreditation in 2000. The CLS (Certified Leasing Specialist) exam was given in California, Texas, Florida and Chicago. Eighty-one people took the exam and 48, or 59%, passed.

The CSM test was administered in Atlanta last September at the Fall Conference. Eighty-one members took the test and 46, or 56.8%, were certified. The CMD test was also given at the conference. Forty-one marketing directors took the exam and 22, or 53.7%, passed.

Sixty-one CSMs and CMDs achieved their senior level designation in 2000. The Senior Level accreditation for Certified Shopping Center Managers and Certified Marketing Directors was established in 1994. The CSM designation was established in 1964 and the CMD in 1971. The first CLS exam was given in 1994. All told, there are now 465 CLS designees, 1,744 CMDs, 2,744 CSMs, and 261 SCSMs and 237 SCMDs.
