INDUSTRY GEARS UP FOR 46TH SPRING CONVENTION

BY DEBRA HAZEL

Visitors to ICSC’s 46th Spring Convention, Leasing Mall & Trade Exposition, to be held May 18-21 in Las Vegas, will notice the first change to the annual event before they leave the airport.

There will be a conference badge validation station at the McCarran International Airport south baggage claim area, next to Carousel No. 1, near the American Airlines baggage office. Other badge validation locations will be set up at Bally’s, Caesars Palace, the Las Vegas Hilton and Convention Center, and Mandalay Bay.

There will be plenty that is new at the conference itself, too, including a focus on open-air centers, a spotlight on the next generation of retail development executives and recollections from baseball and broadcasting legends, including 60 Minutes’ Mike Wallace and former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda.

This year’s theme, “Making the Connection,” is explored both literally and figuratively. At the general session to be held Monday, May 19, titled “Open-Air Centers: Big Challenges and Lots of Opportunity,” attendees will use electronic-response keypads to join panelists in offering their views on such topics as Main Street retail, retail expansion and finance.

Also on Monday the annual panel of mayors of American cities will cover urban development. On Tuesday Daisy Fuentes, host of America’s Funniest Home Videos will preside over a presentation of North America’s hottest retailers.

Steve Burd, chairman, president and CEO of Safeway, is scheduled to speak at Tuesday’s lunch.

There will be 850 exhibitors in the Leasing Mall and 320 at the Trade Expo.
