MID-ATLANTIC MEETING TO HAVE URBAN ANGLE

The theme of urban development will be prominent this year at the Mid-Atlantic Idea Exchange — and appropriately so, given that the meeting, covering Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas and Maryland, will take place in Washington, D.C.

When it comes to downtown development, “there’s a phenomenal amount happening” in Washington, D.C., said Nancy Catron-Hruneni, president of Catron Real Estate, Bowie, Md., co-chairwoman of the Idea Exchange’s program planning committee. “There’s a tremendous amount of retail activity,” she said. Retailers coming into Washington include The Home Depot, Kmart and Giant Foods, she said. Other retailers, including Famous Footwear, Fleming’s Steakhouse, Sephora and Wild Oats Markets, will be outlining their expansion plans for the region as a whole in a Retailer Runway session.

Attendees will take a tour of some of the developing retail sites in the city’s downtown, led by city officials and some of the developers involved. Another tour will take delegates into Northern Virginia for a visit to Arlington, Alexandria, Pentagon City and other locations.

During the Idea Exchange, participants will be briefed on the downtown’s progress by Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams. City development issues also will be covered during some of the afternoon concurrent sessions. One panel will discuss public-private partnerships, while another will lead a presentation titled “What Makes Cities Entertaining?”

The Idea Exchange, which will take place April 17-18, also will feature a products and services exhibition. At least 1,400 attendees are expected.
