KIAWAH STARTS WORK ON FRESHFIELDS MIXED-USE CENTER


Kiawah Island Real Estate, Charleston, S.C., has started on the first phase of Freshfields, a $25 million retail, residential and office project on Seabrook Island, about 20 miles south of Charleston. Newton Farms, an upscale concept of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain, will anchor the 150,000-square-foot first phase. Among the other tenants will be specialty retailers, restaurants and banks. The property is zoned for a total 450,000 square feet of development and as many as 200 residential units. The developer expects to complete the entire project in about 10 years.

 

 

TAUBMAN CENTERS TO BEGIN CHARLOTTE SUPER-REGIONAL

Taubman Centers plans this summer or fall to break ground on NorthLake, a 1.2 million-square-foot super-regional mall in Charlotte, N.C. The $160 million mall is scheduled to open August 2005 with five department stores. Belk, Dillard’s and Hecht’s have already committed. Taubman bought the 120-acre-mall site from Charlotte-based developer Faison Enterprises. Faison will do the road work surrounding the center.

CBL & ASSOCIATES TO START MALL OF SOUTH CAROLINA

CBL & Associates is to break ground next month on Mall of South Carolina, Myrtle Beach. Belk, Dillard’s, Sears and two other department stores will anchor the 1.4 million-square-foot mall. The developer has set aside 57 acres around the mall for freestanding businesses such as restaurants and banks.

WHICHARD BUYS RICHLAND MALL

Raleigh, N.C.-based Whichard Real Estate bought the 726,000-square-foot Richland Mall, Columbia, S.C., from NP Investments for an undisclosed amount. Richland opened in 1989 and is anchored by Belks, Dillard’s and Parisian. Whichard owns 35 strip centers and malls in the Southeastern United States.

KOURY CORP. TO DEVELOP MIXED-USE CENTER IN GREENSBORO

Greensboro, N.C.-based Koury Corp. plans to build The Village at North Elm, a mixed-use project in Greensboro, S.C. The first phase will open late next year. Plans call for 150,000 square feet of retail and office space and 200 luxury apartments. Koury is building the project next to its 99,615-square-foot, grocery-anchored North Elm Village center.

TRIBEK PROPERTIES TO BUILD POWER CENTER IN HILLSBOROUGH

Charlotte, N.C.-based Tribek Properties is building a 400,000-square-foot power center in Hillsborough, N.C., about 10 miles north of Chapel Hill. The first phase, a Wal-Mart Supercenter, is scheduled to open late this summer. The company is also developing Harper Hill, a 100,000-square-foot, grocery-anchored center in Winston-Salem, N.C., and recently completed Moorehead (N.C.) Crossing power center.

FOOD LION CLOSES, OPENS STORES

Salisbury, N.C.-based grocery chain Food Lion shut 41 unprofitable stores in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, leaving it with slightly fewer than 1,200 units. But the company said it will also open 45 new stores this year.
